Well, in my headcanon, I find it impossible for parents being able to name their foals in relation to their cutie mark, since they don't have one yet. Take Vinyl Scratch, for instance. She's a DJ, and has a musical note for a cutie mark. How could her parents have known that's what her talent would be, and named her accordingly? What if she would grow up to be, say, a gardener? It just doesn't make sense.
Then again, Vinyl Scratch is a fan-given name (as are the most of them), so that doesn't really work, but you see my point. Canon, though, how about Shining Armor? He could've gotten a completely different career instead of the Royal Guard and be stuck with that name.
Peppermint's name was mostly derived from the color of his coat, since it's green. If it were to be related to puzzling, though (which is one my own personal hobbies), it'd probably be Missing Piece.
Yes, it do seem very impossible BUT now it happends that it IS a part of the my little pony universe that ponies are named after their cutie mark (and special talent), and since your "homemade" pony is a OC based on the original series, you should follow their rules too. But thats just my opinion...
